Coaching: Freedom From The Outcome
Do you feel you are defined by whether or not you reach your goal in the outdoors?
Does "finishing" a race or climb or thru-hike say anything about you as a person?
Does the idea of quitting or not reaching your outdoor goal seem completely unacceptable?
Is your mental game holding you back?
Are you feeling consumed by the outcome of your upcoming outdoor event?
Do you want to feel less attached to finishing or quitting and more in the moment of enjoying your training process?
In August 2022, I "quit" a Fastest Known Time attempt on the John Muir Trail/Nuumu Poyo after only 6 miles. There was nothing wrong. I was strong, I was ready, my nutrition was dialed, and I had prepared for 8 months and devoted myself to the goal. Except one thing was not lining up - the fact that I no longer wanted to do it. So I bailed. I turned around and went back to my car.
That decision to bail has left me feeling more empowered and liberated than ANY other outdoor experience has left me feeling. Even more than my thru-hikes of the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail, Tahoe Rim Trail, and my solo out-and-back run across the Grand Canyon.
Why?! Because I was listening to myself, I was doing what I needed to do for me and blocking out any noise that wasn't coming from my own voice. And that is something that has fed into every single facet of my life - including my running, work, relationships, and self-talk.
Bailing might be hard and uncomfortable, but it can also be a gift and a superpower.
What You Get
My 1:1 Freedom From The Outcome coaching sessions will help you to:
- Start letting go of the idea that the outcome of your outdoor goal (whether a "success" or not) has anything to do with your worth as a person
- Have a safe space to talk about your thoughts around specific outcomes with your outdoor pursuits (such as any fear of not finishing your event)
- Learn how to celebrate yourself even if your outdoor event doesn't result in a "finish"
- Identify your key red flags for gaining more clarity on if quitting is the right decision for you
- Get comfortable doing what you want on your terms in the outdoors
- I'll share personal stories of my finishes on trails and my experiences of bailing, and my process of being open to the possibility of quitting while I'm training
Coaching Details
A 1:1 coaching session lasts 60 minutes and can be either a video call or phone call. Each purchase is good for one session. After purchasing a coaching session, I'll reach out to schedule a time for a 15-minute consult to learn more about what your outdoor goals are, anything you are currently training for, and other specific details about you so that our official session can be customized to your exact needs. We'll then schedule the 1-hour session for a time that works best for you.
